The Funeral Rule - Consumer Rights
|
| The Federal Trade Commission's Funeral Rule is a federal law applicable to funeral providers. The Funeral Rule grants certain rights to consumers in connection with funeral goods and services. Under the Rule:
(1) consumers have the right to choose the funeral goods and services they want (with some exceptions);
(2) the funeral provider must state this right in writing on a General Price List;
(3) if state or local law requires consumers to buy any particular item, the funeral provider must disclose it on the General Price List, with a reference to the specific law;
(4) the funeral provider may not refuse, or charge a fee, to handle a casket a consumer bought elsewhere; and
(5) a funeral provider that offers cremations must make alternative containers available. Copyright 2010 LexisNexis, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. |
